A scholarship for the physicians who want to change Taiwan healthcare.
If you graduated from a Taiwan medical school in the past few years and you're thinking about graduate study in the United States, we'd like to meet you.
The Shi Wen-Ling Scholarship selects a small group of young Taiwan physicians each year, then walks alongside them through the application process to Stanford or Duke. Every scholar we've selected so far has been admitted. Once you're in, the scholarship funds 18 months of tuition, a living stipend*, airfare, and dedicated mentorship from US faculty. Total support of up to NTD $5,000,000 per scholar.
Applications close September 1, 2026.
ABOUT THE
SHI WEN-LING SCHOLARSHIP
The Shi Wen-Ling Scholarship is a program of the Andrew T. Huang Medical Education Promotion Fund, designed for recent Taiwan medical school graduates who want to do graduate study at a top US university. We select a small group of scholars each year and support them through every step of what comes next.
Once a scholar is selected, we work closely with them on their applications to Stanford and Duke. That includes essay coaching, interview preparation, and a clear-eyed look at what these programs are actually looking for. Every scholar we've selected has been admitted. After admission, scholars enter a six-month pre-departure phase in Taiwan, joining weekly Zoom meetings with current Shi Scholars, meeting their mentors, and learning how American academic culture operates at programs like Stanford and Duke. They then travel to the US for 18 months of funded graduate study. The scholarship covers tuition, a living stipend, airfare, and faculty mentorship, with total support of up to NTD $5,000,000 per scholar.
Taiwan's health system faces real challenges. Suppressed reimbursement rates, high patient volumes, and gaps in care coordination are testing the system in ways that will require a new generation of physician leaders to address. The Shi Scholarship is one piece of preparing that generation. We focus on the leadership skills that aren't taught in medical school: systems thinking, quality improvement, communication, and the ability to work across disciplines on hard problems.
Meet the Scholars
Seven scholars have come through the Shi Wen-Ling Scholarship so far. The first cohort is graduating from Stanford and Duke this spring. The next two cohorts begin at Stanford in the fall.
